Cart Construction
Be creative in your engineering and styling. Looks can be important.
1 - All carts must have 4 wheels in the traditional configuration: 2 front and 2 back, 2 left and 2 right. All wheels must be pneumatic (filled with air, no solid tires). All wheels must support the weight of the cart and offer stability (no training wheels or faux wheels).
2 - All carts must have proper steering such as pitman arm with tie rods, rack and pinion, etc. You may not use foot guided, rope pulled, or lean-to steering systems.
3 - All carts must have effective brakes on at least the 2 rear wheels. All 4 wheels is better but not required. Acceptable brake systems include disks, drums and scrubs. Unacceptable systems include, parachutes, anchors and "Fred Flint-stones". Bike brake pads are an acceptable braking system.
4 - All carts are propelled by gravity only. No motors, engines, bands, shifting weights, levers or other clever devices. All runs will be started at a "dead-stop" without a push, bump or shove from you or another. You may rock your own body back and forth for momentum, but you may not roll your wheels with your hands or shove off from the ground or another cart. Do not try to out think this one, any cheating will result in an instant DQ and you will not even get a DNF. You will simply be listed as not even having been in the race. Clear?
5 - No cart may have weapons of any kind, decorative or not. No spikes, blades, guns, squirters, tossers, launchers, droppers, spillers, projectiles, liquids, traps or flashers. This is not Death Race, Spy Hunter or the Hippodrome. Leave you play stuff at home and keep the hill safe.
6 - No cart may exceed 700 lbs of combined car and driver weight. Any added weight must be secured in a fashion where as it could not come lose if the cart were to be tipped, flipped or spun out. The cart may not exceed 5ft in width, 8ft in length nor 5ft in height. It must be able to fit into a standard 1/2 ton pick-up truck long bed. This next part is not mandatory, but just good practice. Your cart should be light and compact enough for you to load and unload by yourself, as well as light and compact enough for 2 people to lift and walk with.
*7 - A tow ring on front and back of your cart is necessary. This also allows multiple carts to be towed back to the top of the hill in a "train" by a single vehicle.
personal safety
- DOT approved full face motorcycle/ATV helmets are required to race. No-face and half-face helmets are unacceptable for (hopefully) obvious reasons. Without a helmet you shall not race with V.I.S.R.L.
- Motorcycle gloves and jackets are highly encouraged, as is protective eye-wear.
- Long pants, long sleeve shirts and boots with ankle support are encouraged as standard attire.
Tech Inspections:
1. Mandatory tech inspections will be done at every meet point.
Have your soapbox car available for inspection at the meet-up point.
If you refuse to have your car inspected, you will not be eligible to draw a card for starting line placement.
If you have a problem with checking your car to see if its safe to race, then see the 'no bullshit' rule and read it again.
2. Voluntary tech inspections
If you want to have us check out your soapbox car before a race, just to make sure you got the important things finished, then email us and will work something out
